First practices begin for Wausa athletes

WAUSA — The long-awaited fall sports season has finally begun for Wausa athletes.

The Nebraska School Activities Association allowed all Neb. schools to begin practicing for the fall sports on Monday.

Wausa head football coach Arian Alonzo said his athletes took advantage of the time off from other activities to get in shape for the season.

“Our boys worked really hard in the weight room and they took advantage of the time allotted to us,” Alonzo said. “I don’t know if relieved is the right word to use but I’m extremely thankful for our seniors, for some of them this is the only sport they play.”

Alonzo said the Wausa School administration has outlined a good plan to try and keep school and sports operating, while trying to keep everyone safe in the pandemic.

“I think that my staff and administrators have put together a good plan to do what we can to ensure the safety of our student athletes,” he said.

Greg Conn is getting ready once again to lead his girls out to the court. He will work with a very young squad with only nine juniors and seniors in the entire program.

“However, as young as we may be we bring back a lot of experience,” Conn said. “We will start with 25 players on our squad. We have had an excellent summer of workouts in terms of the weight room and what we were able to accomplish on the court.”

Conn said he and the team want to get things going, but are a little unsure how everything will go because of the pandemic.

“We are very excited to get practice under way, but also feeling somewhat anxious on what the season will bring,” he said. “As I see it, we will take it one day at a time and do the things we are supposed to do to keep our kids safe.”

The current schedule calls for the volleyball season to start with a Jamboree here with Boyd County on Tuesday, Aug. 25.

The football season is slated to begin on that following Friday, Aug. 28 when the Vikings travel down the road to Verdigre for a 4 p.m. football game.
