Cross country girls run to another meet win

NIOBRARA — The Bloomfield-Wausa cross country team took to the Niobrara/Verdigre Invitation and according to head coach Duane Wilken, it may have been a race with the nicest weather ever “for a meet in the 70s and low humidity.”

The coach also liked how his team ran as the girls won the meet for the fourth time in a row and sweeping the second through fifth individual spots.

Christina Martinson (19:52), Carrylee Martinson (20:46), Darla Nelson (20:52) and Ella McFarland (21:03) were the fleet feet that carried the day for the champs.

“The team competed very well with the girls dominating again,” he said. “Scoring for this meet was changed to adding up only the three fastest times instead of the top four places. The boys squad also competed extremely well by placing second out of a field of 11 schools.”

Wilken noted the boys performance considering the youth on the roster with three total underclassmen joining one senior and a junior.

Bloomfield/Wausa’s Addison Smith won the race with a 16:27 time and was joined by Cade Wakely (18:19) and Tyler Hansen (18:35) in recording the team’s top-three times.
