Combined youth football team concludes league play

WAUSA — The Wausa youth football team concluded its season this past Sunday. The football team is made up of fourth through sixth grade boys from Osmond and Wausa.

The team is coached by Tim Schindler, Brad Hoesing, Jared Gillilan, Brandon Kristensen and Jared Wingert.

Carrie Gillilan is the communication director for the team as she keeps everyone informed on all practice and game times.

The team played in the expanded Northeast Nebraska Youth Football League this year. The league has expanded throughout the years and include an east and west division with a tournament at the end of five weeks of games.

The team is usually broken in to two groups. The first group is the older boys, usually in fifth and sixth grade, and then a younger team made up of fourth and fifth graders. Some boys play on both teams, depending on the number of athletes that participate.

The older boys had a good season and had a record of 3-2, with wins over Laurel, Creighton, and Randolph. Their losses were to Stanton and Wynot. The quarterback for the older team was Jaxon Wingert of Osmond. The younger boys also had a great season. Their quarterback was Ashton Baue of Wausa.

The older boys qualified to play in the third-place game this past Sunday. Despite the best efforts of the older boys, they fell to Plainview and take fourth place in the league with a final score of 14-28.

The younger boys also played that day and they were victorious with a win! The final score for them was 21-7.

“The boys were fun to watch throughout the season,” their coaches said. “There were passing plays that ended in touchdowns and fake passes for running gains. It is great to see the growth throughout the season with the young athletes.”

Their coaches put in a lot of time in teaching these young athletes the game and working with them to know their strengths and weaknesses.

By doing this, the coaches can help overcome some of the fears of playing tackle football and help the young athletes excel at the skills they have learned.

“The coaches are amazing and their willingness to volunteer their time to the youth and community is very much appreciated,” parents of the football players said. “It will be fun to see where these young athletes go in the next few years as some will continue with youth football while the older boys will move on to junior high next year.”
