Casey earns gold to open new wrestling season

CREIGHTON — The Quad Couny Northeast wrestling team took part in the Creighton Invitational Saturday to open the new wrestling season.

The Blaze had 10 wrestlers earn medals on the day.

Blaze wrestler Kolby Casey put together a 5-0 record at the meet to earn the title in the 220-pound weight class.

As a team, the Blaze finished fifth on the day.

Three other Blaze wrestlers also wrestled for titles in the season-opening tourney, but ended up having to settle for silver.

Emilee Olson took second in her weight class, while Ajay Gubbels posted a 3-1 mark on the day to earn runner-up honors in the 170-pound weight class.

Fischer Carson put together a 4-1 mark, only tasting defeat in the title match to earn the runner-up slot in the 285-pound division.

Several other Blaze wrestlers also earned medals at the season-opening meet.

Carter Olson also had a successful first outing, putting together a 2-2 mark to earn the bronze medal in the 132-pound class.

Andrew Sohler and Justin Backer both earned fourth-place medals, while Gabe Wortman and Daniel Puppe both finished fifth at the meet.

Kage Peterson put together a 2-3 mark to earn seventh place.

Gage Jensen and Gavin Wortman also competed in the meet did not earn medals.
