Cards pick up fifth straight ‘W’

RANDOLPH — The Cardinals made it five in a row last week with a pair of Lewis and Clark Conference wins.

The Cardinals jumped out front early and stayed there on their way to a 69-36 win over L&C rival Wausa here Tuesday.

The Cards outscored the Vikes 19-9 in the first frame, then extended their lead to 36-20 at the end of the first half.

Randolph continued to score at will in the second half, earning an 18-8 edge in the third quarter and finishing the game out with a 15-8 run to earn the 33-point win.

The Cardinal offense was led by a balanced attack as four Redbirds finished in doublefigures. Jamison Svehla led all scorers with his 23-point effort. Carter Schnoor added 16, while Keaton Backhaus swished the nets for 15 and Justin Haselhorst chipped in with 11.

Despite a mid-game slump, the Cards hung on Friday to earn a 49-37 road victory over Plainview.

The Cards came out of the gates strong, earning a 15-9 first-quarter advantage. The Pirates switched things up in the second frame to outscore Randolph 14-9 and narrow the gap to just one point, 24-23, at the break. Defense dominated to start the second half. The Plainview defense limited Randolph to just two points in the frame, while the Pirates put up nine of their own to take a 32-26 lead into the final frame.

The Cards regrouped in the fourth quarter, then hit their foul shots down the line to earn the come-from-behind victory.
