Cards hold off late rally to win finale

RANDOLPH — The Hartington-Newcastle Wildcats ended the regular season on a sour note last week.

Coach Nick Haselhorst and his team traveled to Randolph to try and stop the streaking Randolph Cardinals Friday night, but ended up falling, 47-40.

A second quarter Randolph surge did in the ‘Cats.

Defense dominated to open Friday’s game, as the Cards earned a 6-5 scoring advantage.

Randolph’s offense broke things open in the second frame with a 15-4 run to give the Cards a 20-10 halftime advantage.

The home team extended its lead in the third quarter with an 11-8 run to take a 31-18 lead into the final frame.

The ‘Cats put together a good rally in the final frame with a 22-16 run, but it wasn’t enough to dig out of the early hole.

HNS was led in the contest by Shaye Morten’s 19 points. Isaac Bruning also hit double figures, chipping in with 11.

Randolph was led in the contest by Carter Schnoor’s 23-point effort. Keaton Backhaus also had a solid game. He collected a doubledouble with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
