Cards enter post-season with win streak

RANDOLPH — The boys basketball postseason tipped off Tuesday, so a number of potential scenarios face local teams and the hopes of their fans come Thursday.

District D2-4 is being held at Wisner-Pilger High School and the Randolph Cardinals (14-7) were the No. 1 seed going in and were set to face Emerson-Hubbard. The Pirates defeated Winside in Monday’s play-in game to earn the date with the Cards.

If they came out on top, Randolph would face the winner of No. 2 Pender (5-17) and No. 3 Wynot (6-16) at 7 p.m. Thursday in the SubDistrict title game.

The win against Hartington/Newcastle was a bonus for the team heading into the playoffs, according to head coach Mark Anderson.

“It was a tough game and we played very good defense ‘til the fourth quarter,” Anderson said of the win, paced by Carter Schnoor’s 23-point output.

As for Wynot, they ended the regular season on the heels of a 75-38 loss to LCC.

“They are very athletic team and they shoot the ball well from the field,” Wynot head coach Lee Heimes said. “They won our conference tournament this year and they are a very good team. We had a hard time with taking care of the basketball. When we took care of the ball, we had good looks at the basket.”

“We played Pender earlier in the year and we beat them in a close game. They like to get up and down the court in transition and shoot the three.”
