Cardinals knock off undefeated Bloomfield

RANDOLPH — Defense proved to be the big difference here Thursday.

The Randolph Cardinals used a solid defensive effort to hand the Bloomfield Bees a 45-36 setback for their first loss of the season.

Randolph’s nine-point win also marked the Cards first victory of the 2019-20 campaign.

Randolph worked the court to a 9-6 first-quarter advantage, and then extended their lead in the second frame with a solid 17-13 run.

Defense again dominated to start the second half, with Bloomfield managing to outscore the Cards, 10-9 to cut their deficit to 35-29 heading into the final frame.

Randolph outscored the Bees 10-7 over the final eight minutes to secure the win.

The Cardinal offense was led in the contest by a pair of doublefigure scorers, as Carter Schnoor connected for 19 points and and Keaton Backhaus hit for 11. Backhaus led the team in rebounding, pulling down eight.

On Tuesday, the Cards hosted Wakefield and hung with the 4-2 Trojans through three quarters of play.

The Cards trailed by one point, 42-41, heading into the final frame.

The Wakefield defense began to wear the Cards down in the second half.

“Things turned and they used their ability to press and wear us down,” Coach Mark Anderson said.

Wakefield began to hit its shots in the final stanza, putting together a 26-14 run to earn the 62-56 win.

The Cards had three double-figure scorers in the contest. Keaton Backhaus paced the Randolph offense, pumping in 28 points on the night. Carer Schnoor chipped in with 12, while Justin Haselhorst added 11. Backhaus also led the team in rebounding, cleaning the glass for eight

boards.
