Cardinal golfers host Invitational

RANDOLPH — With the weather supposed to warm up, the golf season is definitely adding to the temperature as Randolph High School saw its campaign on the course ratchet up last week.

The Cardinals hosted a triangular with Plainview and Cedar Catholic on April 25, traveled to Hartington for the Cedar Catholic Invitational the next day and Thursday and Saturday, battled out at invitationals at Laurel and Pierce.

“I feel like we are getting close to breaking out, there has been a lot of up and down, but improvement in the right areas,” Randolph head coach Rob Engel said. “Bryson Eledge showed what he is capable of with a 41 on his back nine holes at LCC and Ajay and Andy Gubbels have played well in stretches, but just need to avoid the big numbers.

“To make a push at districts we need for it all to come together and have everyone playing their best at the right time.”

At their own invite, Randolph was led by Ajay Gubbels (47) and Eledge (47) while Collyn Beal added a 48 while Cedar Catholic won the event by 21 strokes.

At the Cedar Catholic invitational Beal shot a 92 for 24th place while Ajay and Andy Gubbels scored 100 and 102 to finish 37th and 45th. Randolph finished 10th out of 16 teams.

Beal medaled at LCC with a 14th-place score (88) while Eledge shot a 92 after the 41 on the second nine to finish 20th.

The team’s play at Pierce was postponed due to rain and won’t be able to attend the makeup due to graduation.

If Beal keeps his play up, things should keep trending in the right direction.

“Collyn has led the way all season, he got a medal at the Laurel meet and played consistently there,” Engel said. “Hopefully as the weather heats up his game will do the same and he can pick up a few more medals this season.”

The team traveled to the conference tournament Tuesday at Osmond and will play at Stanton Friday (see results in next week’s edition).

“I hope to see some continued improvement and consistency,” Engel said. “We are close to having it all come together, but we are running out of time, golf is such a short season and packed with a lot of meets in a limited time, so we need to get out and make the best of it.”
