Cardinal comeback comes up short against Wynot

RANDOLPH — It’s been a rough start for the Randolph Cardinal basketball team as a young roster is still trying to find its way.

The Cardinals lost 78-39 at Wakefield, 55-25 at Bloomfield and narrowly, 50-49 at home against Wynot.

Against Wakefield, Tristan Mosel scored 14 points and grabbed nine rebounds and in the Bloomfield loss, the Cardinals got 19 of their points from Justin Haselhorst.

“Against Bloomfield, our best quarter again was the first quarter,” Randolph head coach Jim Hixson said. “Justin had eight of his game high 19 in that quarter.  We struggled to score outside of Justin. We did marginally better defensively holding Bloomfield to 55, which is under our season average.”

Randolph shot 1-for-16 from the three-point line.

“We need to make a conscious effort to get to the rim and not settle for threes,” Hixson said. “We did do better limiting turnovers.”

Randolph led Wynot 19-18 at halftime and the two teams waged a back-and-forth affair before the Blue Devils held on for the win.

Collyn Beal scored 22 points while Haselhorst added 17 points.

“We played by far our best game of the year,” Hixson said. “Justin handles the ball and takes most of the shots and does a really good job.  The surprise of the evening was Collyn Beal.  Collyn had by far his best game of his career.”

Beal was eight of nine from the floor and had five rebounds.

“It was a welcomed surprise,” Hixson said. “As a team our biggest improvement was in the turnover department.  We had only eight on the evening which is great against a fullcourt man team like Wynot.

“I was proud of the effort the boys put in.  If we can replicate the effort and execution of tonight for the rest of the season, we will see our record improve.”

Beal, admittedly, is not happy with the start and although he believes the future has positive offerings, but some things are needing fixing – and soon – for the Cardinals.

“As a team, we are still young and figuring it out,” Beal said. “Against Wynot, I think the team starting to figure out how things are going to work, and we had a perfect rhythm. We also had our warmups in the old gym and the coaches pushed us to be better rebounding and be more confident.

“We still need to improve our hardcore strength. We are weak. We need to hit the weightroom because we are being bullied a lot. Like myself, I am 6-foot-3, and I am skinny. I have lost all my strength from football. We could be a lot better if we hit the boards.”

Beal also notes that the Cardinals are a smaller team so that could lead to a lack of confidence for the time being.

“It’s hard, because every game we try and the other team tries even harder and it’s hard to keep up,” Beal said. “Last game, we broke the press really well and it was really nice, because we started to move the ball. We decided to work harder in practice (after losing to Bloomfield), and we got our confidence and thanks a lot to the coaches pushing us even more.”
