Boys are runners-up in Randolph Holiday Tournament

RANDOLPH – After a short holiday break the Osmond boys’ basketball team was back in action for another tournament down the road in Randolph.

Osmond 46, Winside 33

The Tigers were matched up against a familiar foe in the Winside Wildcats on Tuesday, Dec. 28. Osmond was looking to get off to a good start off their moratorium break and they sure did in the first quarter.

Taking a 19-9 advantage was the Tigers. Much of the momentum was carried into the second quarter as Osmond poured in another 14 points, making the score 33-21 as the boys headed into halftime.

Despite the solid first half effort, the Wildcats were still ready to fight and make this game interesting. After some scoring in the third quarter, and the boys in white and orange cooling off, Winside won the quarter 10-5 and cut into the lead.

Starting the fourth, the Tigers only found themselves up 7, but thanks to some added attention on the defensive end, along with scoring from the upperclassmen, Osmond sealed the victory with a final score of 46-33.

Leading scorers for the game were Ryan Schmit (25), Bryan Solorzano (9), Zach Reikofski (9), and Owen Severson (3).

Stuart 50, Osmond 42

After defeating the Winside Wildcats the day before, the Osmond boys were once again on the hardwood on Wednesday, Dec. 29, and this time looking to claim a holiday tournament championship. However, this matchup was against a team with a 6-2 record coming in to the contest.

Like many other games before, the Tigers were looking to come out to good start, but they were matched with some even effort form the opposition. After trading some threes, Stuart found themselves up 12-11 as the first quarter came to a close.

Stuart’s length and athleticism was on full display in the second frame as their press forced Osmond to make some turnovers and allowed for some easy buckets on the other side of the court. At the break, Osmond was still in fighting distance, down eight, 27-19.

Building off their second-quarter success, the Broncos continued to score on the offensive end and pushed to the lead to 38-24. With the end of the third quarter winding down, the Tigers decided to go on a bit of their own run.

Thanks to some three-point shooting, Osmond cut the lead to five points at the end of the end of the third, and proceeded to tie the game 40-40. After some hard-fought minutes, the Tigers ended up falling just short of a great comeback, 50-42.

Top performers for Osmond were Ryan Schmit, who scored 20 points with four threes; Bryan Solorzano and Stevin Hasler, each chipping in with five points, and Xander Brown, contributing eight points and nine rebounds off the bench.
