Bears suffer first setback of the year
LAUREL — After dropping their first game of the year on the road Tuesday, the Laurel-Concord-Coleridge boys basketball team bounced back with an easy win over Plainview.
The Bears hit the road Tuesday for a matchup of returning state tournament teams with Ponca, and the Indians were able to pull away with a 63-49 win.
The game was close throughout the first half, but Ponca used a strong second half defensive effort to pull away with the win.
The Ponca defense forced the Orange and Black into taking some low percentage shots. That cost the Bears as they ended up hitting on just 3-14 from behind the arc and 15-35 field goals.
Evan Haisch scored 16 points and Evan Schmitt added 10 for the Bears. Austin Hall scored nine points, Cael Hartung had six, Wilton Roberts and Deagan Puppe each had three and Lucas Rasmussen added a bucket.
Haisch led the team in rebounds with five while Puppe and Hall had four each. Schmitt had two assists and five steals.
On Friday, the Bears took it to Plainview early and cruised to a 68-31 victory over the Pirates.
Ten different LCC players found their way into the scorebook, led by game-high efforts from Schmitt and Haisch with 17 points apiece. Hartung added 10 points, Carter Kvols scored six, Roberts had five, Jake Rath scored four, Rasmussen had three and Dan Puppe, Deagan Puppe and Hall each had two.
Hartung had seven boards and Hall had six to lead the defense. Haisch recorded four assists and Schmitt had five steals.
LCC played at home against Bloomfield on Tuesday and will be in the Great Northeast Nebraska Shootout next week in Wayne.
