Bears settle for fifth at Great NE Neb. Shootout
WAYNE — The Laurel-Concord-Coleridge Bears took on one of the top teams in Class C1 at last week’s Great Northeast Neb. Shootout.
LCC traded point for point with Auburn in the first game of their tourney opener as the teams felt each other out in the first quarter.
The Bears offense took off in the second frame, outscoring the southeast Nebraska team 22-16 to take a 29-21 lead into the locker room.
Auburn made some big adjustments in the locker room, which resulted in a dominant thirdquarter performance, outscoring the Orange and Black 19-5 to take a 40-34 lead heading into the final frame.
The Bulldogs sealed the win in the final frame with an 18-9 scoring run.
LCC had two players hit double figures in the contest. Evan Haisch led the squad with 17 points, while Jake Rath chipped in with 14.
Rath had a solid all-around game, as he hit a double-double by pulling down a team-high 11 rebounds, as well.
The Bears dominated Homer in their second tourney game, earning a 60-29 win.
Coach Todd Erwin made sure plenty of athletes got into this one, as 11 different Bears found the scoring column in a balanced attack.
In the fifth-place game, the Bears took on Lewis and Clark foe Winnebago, earning a 64-59 win.
Jake Rath was unstoppable in this one, nailing 26 points and pulling down 16 rebounds for yet another double-double. Evan Haisch also had a solid game, chipping in 12 points and pulling down seven boards.
The Bears will be in action again Thursday when they meet rival Cedar Catholic in a Class C2 Top 10 match up.
