Bears roll to a pair of big season-opening wins
LAUREL — The state-rated Laurel-Concord-Coleridge Bears put a couple of big wins in the win column to open the new boys basketball season.
The Orange and Black opened the 2021-22 campaign at home with a 78-34 whitewashing of Creighton.
A trio of Bears hit for double figures in the season opener. Jake Rath led the Bear attack with 21 points, while Evan Haisch poured in 15. Grant Erwin added 23 of his own to the cause.
Rath and Haisch started the season out in great fashion as both also collected doubledoubles against the Bulldogs.
Rath had a team-high 13 boards, while Haisch pulled down 10 rebounds. When Erwin wasn’t shooting, he was dishing the ball off to a teammate. He ended the night with total five assists.
Wilton Roberts did his best to disrupt Creighton’s offense, collecting five steals in the contest.
On Friday, the Bears played at home against Crofton and came away with a big 69-46 win.
Jake Rath was on fire in this one, hitting for a team-high 25 points and yanking down 15 boards for his second straight double-double.
Evan Haisch also hit for double figures on the night, collecting 19 points during his time on the floor.
Wilton Roberts kept the Crofton offense off balance by collecting four steals in the contest. Four other Bear athletes also earned steals against Crofton at home.
