Bears open up with blow-out win

LAUREL — It may have been zero week for Nebraska High School football, but Laurel-Concord-Coleridge’s Evan Haisch was definitely feeling more hero.

The senior running back, who came into the year after a big season last fall, continued where he left off with 12 carries for 206 yards for a 17.17 average and four touchdowns to lead the Bears to a 62-0 rout of Homer in the opener for both teams at Haskell Field.

Haisch scored on runs of 65, 60 and 10 yards in the first quarter to propel LCC to a 24-0 lead after 12 minutes and added a 12-yard score before halftime as the Bears cruised into intermission up 48-0.

All told, LCC ran for 309 yards and passed for another 147 to finish with 456 yards to Homer’s scant 46 yards.

Haisch gained 192 of his yards in the first half and his first two touches went for scores.

“Our offense, defense and special teams played very well,” LCC head coach Alan Gottula said. “However, we will need to eliminate turnovers, penalties and mental errors.”

Daniel Puppe hauled in two touchdown passes, both of which went for 53 yards and Evan Schmitt ran for 42 yards on 10 carries while completing all five of his pass attempts for 159 yards.

Dylan Taylor added a two-yard run for a score.

The Bear defense was dominant all night long.

The Black and Orange D also got involved in the scoring action recording a safety on a Markus Martin tackle in the Homer endzone.

Sutton Ehlers led the defense with six solo tackles with three assists and Martin and Taylor added five more.

Kolby Casey recorded the Bears only sack.

This week, the Bears travel to Wisner-Pilger 7 p.m. Friday for what is expected to be a tougher contest.

“Wisner-Pilger will be a competitive football team and we expect them to be strong at the skill positions,” Gottula said. “We will need to eliminate turnovers, penalties and mental errors this week, execute and play physical and aggressive football.”
