Bears drop a thriller to Stanton Mustangs

LAUREL — Stanton’s stingy defense spoiled the Bear’s Homecoming festivities here Friday.

The two D1 powerhouses battled evenly throughout the first half as neither team was able to reach paydirt. Both squads were finally able to break the plane of the goal line in the third quarter, but Stanton nailed a field goal in the final frame to rally ahead for the win.

The Mustang ‘D’ held the Bears Evan Haisch to one of the lowest rushing outputs of his career. He was only able to muster 48 yards on 18 carries. As a team, the Bears carried the ball 34 times for just 47 yards.

The Bear passing attack fared better, however, as Evan Schmitt connected on 4-8 passes for 71 yards.

The Bears have a bye week this week, but will be back in action again Sept. 17 when they travel to Tilden to take on the 0-2 Elkhorn Valley Falcons.
