Bears bounce back after loss to Cedar Catholic

LAUREL — After being overrun by Cedar Catholic the night before, the Laurel-Concord-Coleridge boys basketball team bounced back and claimed a hard-fought home win over Winnebago to cap the week’s play.

On Thursday, the Bears got off to a slow start against Cedar Catholic as the Trojans raced to a 16-point first-quarter lead on their way to a 75-40 blowout.

Cael Hartung was the only Bear in double figures, finishing with 13 points. Evan Haisch scored seven, Wilton Roberts put in six, Grant Erwin, Evan Schmitt and Jake Rath each had four and Lucas Rasmussen scored two.

Hartung, Rath and Haisch each had four rebounds, Haisch had three assists and Rasmussen and Schmitt both had two assists.

The Bears came back from an eight-point halftime deficit the following night, outscoring Winnebago 41-30 in the second half to come away with a 56-53 squeaker over the Indians.

It was a defensive battle early on, but Winnebago used an 18-9 second-quarter surge to take a 23- 15 halftime lead before LCC came back to get the win.

Haisch had a game-high 21 points and Schmitt added 15 for the winners. Hartung and Rath each scored seven points, Roberts had three and Erwin contributed a free throw.

Rath led the team in rebounds with eight while Hartung and Haisch each had seven and Roberts grabbed six. Schmitt had two assists and three steals.

LCC hosted Wayne on Tuesday and will be at Creighton for a Friday matchup before returning home next Tuesday to host Hartington-Newcastle.
