Bears add pair of wins to improve to 12-3

HARTINGTON — The Laurel-Concord-Coleridge Bears improved to 12-3 on the season with a pair of road victories last week.

On Tuesday, the Bears outlasted Hartington-Newcastle 60-53, using a big fourth-quarter rally to come back from a four-point deficit.

LCC started the contest by building an 18-12 first-quarter advantage. Hartington-Newcastle came back in the second frame to outscore the Bears 15-11 and cut their halftime deficit to just two points — 29-27. 

A Jake Peitz jumper to open the second half put the Cats in a 29-29 tie with the Bears.

Hartington-Newcastle then used a good defensive effort to limit the Bears to four points and take a 37-33 lead into the final stanza.

The Bears roared back in the final eight minutes, though, outscoring the Wildcats 27-16 to claim the win.

Cael Hartung led three Bears in double figures with 17 points, with Noah Schutte adding 15 and Evan Haisch putting in 13. Ty Erwin added nine points and Evan Schmitt scored six.

Schutte had another double-double with 14 rebounds, with Hartung, Haisch and Erwin each grabbing four. Schmitt had four assists and Schutte dished out three and added three steals.

On Thursday, the Bears jumped on Battle Creek early and cruised to a 63-43 win in Battle Creek.

The Bears exploded for 26 points in the opening frame, taking a 15-point lead into the locker room and were never threatened after that.

Schutte lit up the Braves for a game-high 29 points and made it a double-double with 18 rebounds. Schmitt added 11 and Erwin tossed in 10. Haisch added seven points and Hartung put in six.

Hartung and Erwin both had five boards. Erwin had three assists and Schutte had six steals.
