Bear tracksters qualify for trip to State

HARTINGTON — Laurel-Concord-Coleridge traveled up to the Hartington Community Athletic Complex May 12 for Class C-4 District Track and Field Meet and the chance to advance to this week’s Nebraska State Track Meet at Omaha’s Burke Stadium.

The Bears finished fourth in the team race behind Cedar Catholic’s 122.33 points, Hartington-Newcastle’s 103 and Ponca’s 84. LCC finished with 71 points.

On the girls’ side, the Lady Bears ended up eighth and had a single person qualify for state.

The boys worked their collective way to fourth behind some quality performances.

The Puppe boys handled things in the hurdles with Deagan winning the 110 high’s and Daniel taking second behind his brother, before taking second in the 300-meter hurdles later in the meet. Deagan took fifth in the 300’s.

Deagan is also at the top of the charts to repeat as the 110-meter champion in Class C but winning at that level takes a lot of hard work - which he has put in.

Daniel also placed fifth in the pole vault, clearing the bar at 10-feet-3 inches.

Shane Benson was the only other automatic qualifier for Laurel-Concord-Coleridge by taking a silver medal in the high jump with a best of 5-11.

Evan Haisch finished one spot out of a trip to Omaha in the 200 where he placed third in 23.38 seconds and Wilton Roberts came up just short in the 400-meter run, also finishing third.

The Bear 4X100 team of Daniel Puppe, Markus Martin, Roberts and Deagan Puppe was one place away placing second in the event at districts.

The 4X800 team, consisting of Tyler Olson, Landen Leonard, Carter Korth and Preston Rose placed third with a time of 9:30.94 while the 4X400 squad of Martin, Lucas Ramussen, Roberts and Haisch placed sixth.

Carter Kvols was fifth in the 800 with a time of 2:14.24, Dylan Taylor was sixth in the triple jump and Aaron Bloom was also sixth in the discus.

Berniece McCorkindale was the lone Lady Bear to earn a trip to the state meet with a runner-up showing in the shot put with a toss of 36-11.50, just a half-inch away from the gold medal won by Lexi Eickhoff of Cedar Catholic.

McCorkindale also placed sixth in the discus.

Tali Erwin just missed in the high jump, placing third after clearing 4-09 and she was fourth in the 100-meter hurdles.

Reggan Kuhlman earned a bronze medal in the discus with a toss of 104-11 and Mallory Eriksen was sixth in the triple jump with a best of 31-06.25.

The Laurel-Concord-Coleridge 4X100 team of Ella Hartung, Eriksen, Avery Hahne and Erwin placed sixth as did the 4X400 team of Haley Christensen, Chelsea Potts, Ryleigh Specht and Julia Johnson.

The Classes C and D Nebraska State Track and Field Championships are set for May 20 and 21 in Omaha. Classes A and B are set to run May 18 and 19.
