Baseball, Softball season starts out slow for Wausa

WAUSA — The Wausa Summer League season started for the older groups this past week. It was good to see these athletes back on the field after having a year break.

The 11/12 boys and 13/14 boys moved to the Quad County league to be able to play more teams in their respective age groups. The 16/18 girls are always short of teams in the league, so were able to pick up games with Ponca this past week.

The 11/12 Peewee and 13/14 Pony teams traveled to Plainview on Monday to start off their season. The 11/12 Peewees and 13/14 Ponies have combined with Osmond to be able to have enough to fill a team.

The 11/12 Peewees lost to the Plainview Pirates 0-5. The 13/14 Pony boys were up next. The Vikings were up to bat first but were unable to get a runner home. Jake Munter started the game off pitching. Cade Wakeley caught a pop fly in center field to bring up the first out, while Cody Gansebom fielded the ball at short stop and threw to third base for another out. Jake Munter finished out the third out with a strikeout. The Vikings struggled to get their bats going and were not able to score the first inning. During the second inning, Jake Munter continued to pitch and Koy Kraft was able to get two outs on third base, one from a throwdown from catcher, Colton Baue, and then another tag on a runner trying to steal third base. Donavin Seagren caught a pop fly in left field to close out the second inning. The Vikings still struggled to get their bats going and were unable to score during the third inning. Sienna pitched for the Lady Vikings and started off strong. Marissa got the first out with a pop fly to first base, Blair Wakeley caught another one in center field and to finish out the inning Peyton Privett got the third out on third base. Ponca was able to score one run that inning though before the Lady Vikings shut them down. During the second inning the Lady Vikings were unsuccessful in bringing home any runs. The Lady Vikings allowed four runs in before shutting Ponca down with three outs from a strikeout from Sienna, a pop fly catch by Hadley Vanness in right field and then a tag out on third by Peyton. The third inning would be scoreless for the Lady Vikings again. Ponca would get in one run before Sienna would strikeout two batters and Peyton would catch a pop-up foul ball. The Lady Vikings came out in the fourth inning strong. Peyton was able to get on base with a walk and Hadley Vanness would get a base hit to advance Peyton. Before the Lady Viking earned their third out, they were able to advance both Peyton and Hadley home. This was not enough to beat Ponca though and the Lady Vikings fell 4-6.

The next game brought out Charlie Price as the pitcher and new fielders. The Lady Vikings were able to earn one run in the top of the first inning bringing Peyton home. The Lady Vikings would battle through three innings, but the bats would just not go their way despite their best effort including a triple late in the fourth inning by Taylor Alexander. Jaide Kaiser would finish out the game as pitcher but despite the best efforts by the Lady Vikings, Ponca was able to outscore the Lady Vikings 2-8.

On Thursday night, there were many games in three different towns being played by Wausa teams. The 11/12 and 13/14 softball teams traveled to Creighton. The 11/12 softball team started the night. Kennedy Gillilan started off pitching for the Lady Vikings. Creighton was tough competition and earned the five run maximum for the inning. Elle Brazel had a base hit in the first inning, but it was Isabelle Seagren who got the first scoring run. Avery Stevens would come into pitch in the second inning, but Creighton would go on to earn the five-run maximum for the second and third inning. The Lady Vikings were able to score three runs by Lexi Wright, Reagan Gillilan and Avery Stevens in the third inning but it was not enough to over come Creighton and the final score was 4-15.

The 13/14 Lady Viking Softball team would also fall to Creighton 2-15.

The 11/12 Peewee and 13/14 Pony Baseball team would travel to Laurel on Thursday night. The 11/12 Peewee baseball team would fall to Laurel 1-6.

It was a hard-fought game, and the boys are starting to become more comfortable on the field and at bat. The 13/14 Pony Baseball team would also fall to Laurel 3-13. Colton Baue and Vinnie Vanness would be the pitchers for that game.

The 16/18 Lady Vikings were at home for another double header with Ponca. This game had four of the Lady Vikings players coming in at the last minute from State Track and Addi Sporleder would start off pitching for the Lady Vikings. Hadley Vanness would get the first out with a line drive to third base while Addi would get the second with a throw to first basemen Marissa Bruce. The third out would come from a throwdown to second base by catcher Abby Kaiser. Ponca was able to bring home 1 run though before the Lady Vikings shut them down. Addi would come back into pitch in the fourth inning and the Lady Vikings would allow three more runs before earning the third out. The Lady Vikings would fall to Ponca 5-16. The second game of the double header started with Sienna West pitching for the Lady Vikings. The Lady Vikings allowed two runs the first inning and three runs in the second inning. Ponca would bunt most of the game and it gave the Lady Vikings a workout and a great learning opportunity. The Lady Vikings started off slow on bats with the first three innings going scoreless but in the fourth inning the hits started! The first two batters for the Lady Vikings in the fourth inning drew the first and second out, but that did not stop the Lady Vikings. Blair Wakeley came out and hit one to left field to start the rally. Addi, Abby, Taylor Privett, Morgan Kleinschmit and Sienna West would all get home before Ponca could earn that third out. The Lady Vikings would shut Ponca down in the fifth inning and did not let them score. This gave the Lady Vikings their first win of the season with a score of 6-5.

The younger teams will start their games this week, so be looking for updates and come down to the ballpark to cheer them on.
