Area gymnasts begin 2021 competition season

MITCHELL, S.D. — Local gymnast Julia Johnson, 14, Laurel, began her 2021 gymnastics season Jan. 2, with her first competition in Mitchell, S.D.

Johnson competed against a total of 19 girls in her division, Xcel Platinum, in all four events, including beam, bars, floor and vault. Gymnasts can place in each of the individual events as well as receive an all-around score.

Johnson received fourth place in the all-around competition. Johnson is a member of Flippers Gymnastics based in Crofton.

They compete in competitions across Nebraska, Iowa, and South Dakota each spring. Their coach, Sarah Peterson, has operated the gym for the past 10 years.

Julia is the daughter of Joel and Angela Johnson, Laurel; and is the granddaughter of Darell and Joyce Thoene, Hartington, and Jerry and Glenda Johnson, Laurel. She is the great-granddaughter of Jo Johnson, Laurel.

Lauren Potts, 13, Hartington is also competing on the team.
