Wausa students attend SkillsUSA

WAUSA — Mrs. Hoesing and the students represented Wausa with honor, courage and conviction.

The Contest was the Regional Middle School SkillsUSA Contest at the Midtown Conference Center, Grand Island.

There were 17 schools participating. There are no classes or division. Wausa’s 13 Junior competitiors competed against schools of all sizes.

This is the first year for Middle Schools SkillsUSA in Wausa, so it was a completely new experience for the students.

A team of seven Wausa students won the championship gold medals in Opening and Closing Ceremonies.

Team members included, Mackenzie Vanness, Dyson Cunningham, Kendall Story, Donavin Seagren, Addison Wynia, Sophia Wilken, Hadley Vanness and Henry Kumm.

Individual winners taking home medals include, Silver Medal -Addison Wynia - Job Skills Demonstration A: Quilt Making and Silver Medal-Claire Kumm - Applied Math

There were eight students earning a trip to the State Championships at the State Fairgrounds in April. When they win the State contest they will be headed to Louisville, Ky., in June to compete for a National Championship.

“My goal for our new program was to get someone to that National Championship. I do believe we have that in hand and potentially be able to hang a couple of banners in our gym.” said Mr. Evans, “I am very proud of each and every student that competed. We went into a new adventure and made an impact immediately. We have amazing kids and with the help of Mrs. Hoesing they were able to accomplish amazing things.”

SkillsUSA is a national membership association serving high school, college and middle school students who are preparing for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations, including health occupations, and for further education. SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce. SkillsUSA helps each student excel.

SkillsUSA activities develop positive attitudes, build self-esteem and empower students to excel. They give students a head start in developing valuable professional skills such as communications, interpersonal abilities, time management, teamwork and more. Because SkillsUSA works hand-in-hand with business and industry, students get the skills employers want.
