Wausa sees a slight decrease in enrollment

WAUSA — Wausa Public Schools saw a slight dip in school enrollment compared to last year’s numbers.

A total of 239 students - 124 at the elementary and 115 at the high school - are currently enrolled, a decrease of just one student from the previous year.

“Our enrollment numbers are holding steady with some classes up, others down,” said Superintendent Brad Hoesing. “This is pretty common for our school the past couple of years. We will more than likely fluctuate slightly throughout the school year with kids moving in and out.”

Last year, the local school district had an enrollment of 240.

This year two classes — sophomores and seniors — tie for the largest class in school. Both have 22 students. The third graders have the smallest class with just 10 students. Wausa was not the only school in the area to see a dip in enrollment numbers.

Cedar County’s largest school district at Laurel-Concord-Coleridge also saw a decrease of five students compared with last year’s numbers.

Cedar County’s parochial schools saw a decrease as well with East-West Catholic Elementary in Bow Valley down two students, Holy Trinity down seven students and Cedar Catholic down nine.

Three area schools - Hartington-Newcastle, Wynot, and Randolph - saw increases in enrollment.

Hartington-Newcastle netted an additional 19 students, Randolph is up 10.
