Wausa Digital Design Students Create Children’s Storybook

WAUSA — Wausa students have the opportunity to explore their creative side by taking a Digital Design class.

Dawn Friedrich has been teaching this class since 2014. Throughout this class, students learn the basics of design and apply those skills to a variety of projects—several of which are actually used. For example, students have created logos and t-shirt designs for local businesses, along with designs for our town’s recent Q-125 celebration, to name a few. Currently, students are designing social media announcements for different activities occurring at the school. These images are being added to our community’s social media platforms. Follow Wausa, Nebraska on social media to view the designs.

Last spring, Digital Design students, Ali Lundberg, Madisyn West, and Emily Woockman, tackled a huge Storybook project that consisted of writing their own story for lower elementary students, sketching all of the illustrations for the pages, digitalizing the illustrations so color could be added, and finally moving the pages to Shutterfly to finalize the book. This was a great activity for students to practice working on project management skills. All three students collaborated on writing the story, then each student drew a sketch of what should be included on each page. Once the sketches were done, Ali improved the sketches and then scanned the sketches so Emily and Madisyn could add color and special effects using Adobe Illustrator. Madisyn then typed all the text in Shutterfly and organized the pages.

Students began this project three weeks before school went to remote learning last March. Through technology, students were able to hold live conferences and met at least once a week to check on everyone’s progress.

The finished storybook, titled Just the Way You Are, will be added to the Wausa Elementary Library at the school.
