Troop 208 logs quite a few miles in recent trip

LAUREL — Local Boy Scouts recently logged quite a few miles.

The Troop completed over 1,300 miles driven and over 90 miles of bike riding on the Mickelson Trail.

Troop members did a grueling 25-mile ride on day one, mostly uphill. Then did 18 more miles on day two and wrapped things up with a 50-mile ride on the third day.

A High Adventure trip is required for boys to continue in Boy Scouts to achieve the highest rank, Eagle Scout.

Merit badge options for high adventure trips are biking, hiking or swimming. To obtain their actual cycling merit badge, they are required to ride several times. In total, they need to ride two 10 mile, two 15 mile, two 25 mile, and be part of an organized 50 mile bike ride.

The boys prepared for their trip by riding several times to cover all of their requirements. For their High Adventure trip, they rode the Mickelson Trail, an old railroad bed. The boys rode three consecutive days with trips of 25, 18, and 50 miles equalling 93 miles total. Their trip started in Deadwood, SD and took them to Edgemont, SD. They also included sightseeing trips to Crazy Horse, Mt. Rushmore for the flag ceremony, and Evan’s Plunge. The following fathers went along on the trip, Jay Hall, Jeff Hall, Josh Erwin, and Shannon Benson.

Out of the boys attending, six boys (two are brothers) have a father who achieved their Eagle Award. Jeff, Jeremy and Jay Hall, Josh Erwin, and Jeff Hansen.
