School board speaks with student focus group

OSMOND — The District 42R school board is seeking input on the future of the school. Several different community groups will be involved. In February, the board invited students to fill out a questionnaire and then discuss it with the board. The discussion with that focus group was held on Thursday, Feb. 25. Questions discussed included co-oping, consolidation, future numbers

Questions discussed included co-oping, consolidation, future numbers of students, need for a school presence in the community and providing the best education opportunities possible for students. Co-oping or sharing of activities and classes was noted as a way to keep schools viable.

Discussion was held on enrollment numbers being low during the next number of years. The students voiced their concerns on co-oping and losing their school’s own identity, having to move up in class size for activities, less students being able to play, transportation costs and safety.

Co-oping the English teacher this year was very hard and many concerns were raised. To continue to have boys’ sports, co-oping will probably be necessary. The students are proud of their school, but see the need of a second practice gym, a better track, remodeling in the yellow building, improved and larger wrestling facilities and enforcement of bullying policies.

They felt the current classes offered are good, but more technical (jobrelated) classes would be beneficial. They also felt several classrooms seem to need updating.
