School Board members discuss audit, busses

RANDOLPH — Randolph School Board members met Dec. 16 at the Randolph west school and accepted an audit proposal for three years among other items.

The proposal came from B.D. Red Owl. The board approved the proposal, however, it was not unanimous as board member Cody Backer voted against the proposal.

New buses have arrived, Randolph School Supt. Jeff Hoesing told the Board. The school will have four route busses with less than 60,000 miles.

Dick Bloomquist will begin driving a bus route in January, Hoesing said.

Also Monday, Board members adopted their capacity and projected enrollment figures, which they do every December.

The figures include K-12 and special education programs. It also sets the number of option enrollment students.

“The changes from year to year depend upon the programs,’’ Supt. Hoesing said.

Randolph Elementary School Principal Mary Miller reported on testing results which will determine who gets the state’s individualized reading program.

A new test is currently being considered for high school students.

Teachers also had a technology challenge to integrate technology, Miller said.

Board members were told this year’s Randolph Holiday tournament is set for Dec. 27 and 28.

Hoesing also told Board members that an additional security camera or two will soon be added to the playground area.

Board members also discussed school closings and the possibility of adopting a school policy concerning activities and practices when school is closed for severe weather. No action was taken on the matter, though.

“No school should mean no school, not students coming in to practice,’’ said Board member Loren Haselhorst as he asked about the school’s position on students driving to town in adverse conditions.

Hoesing said it will take time and careful consideration to adopt such a policy.

“Nothing different will be set this year, but this summer the board may discuss and agree on something,’’ Hoesing said. “We need an iron-clad policy on this if we are going to do something. We are responsible for students if we’re attracting them to school. We have no policy on weekend practices.’’

The board ended its regular session, then reconvened in executive session to discuss salaries.
