School Board discusses new ag, art building

RANDOLPH — Randolph School Board members reviewed plans for a new building that would house agriculture and art classes at the high school at its meeting last week.

The new building would include an art room with open space which can be set up as needed as well as include sinks and outlets, said Art Instructor Ryan Surber.

Overall, the art program would be gaining floor space, he said, with the plans featuring restrooms, double doors, storage, a woods lab, a metals lab, vacuum system, paint room, a kiln and art supply room.

“The idea is to have art students close to other labs as I would like to see the students expand into working with metal and wood,’’ Surber said.

The agriculture department would have classrooms and other space available to them at the new building as well.

The building construction would be cement which would become a storm shelter for students.

The proposed cost is $1.4 million. Building in phases or keeping the existing north building are options that would cut down on costs. Another plan will be drawn up that includes construction phases.

Board members also discussed Zearn Math at its meeting last week. The program will be offered to all students throughout the summer and into next school year. Students may log into the program electronically and Elementary Principal Mary Miller has strongly encouraged students to participate at 30 minutes per day. Motivational prizes will be offered.

Board members also heard an update on new high school classes being offered in the Fall. The classes include STEM projects: rockets, mouse traps, bridges, and Rube Goldberg machines; Foundation of Finance: career information and basic personal finance; Junior High strength training; Introduction to Design; Junior High counseling: career information and social skills; and Digital Photography.
