School board accepts resignations; announces Osmond-Randolph co-op mascot, colors

OSMOND — The District 42R Board of Education met Monday, May 9. Among the items on the agenda was accepting resignations of two employees — teacher and coach David Schmit, who is accepting a different position elsewhere, and school nurse Tiffany Gansebom, who has accepted a new position at her full-time employer.

Principal Polt Reports

Principal Kurt Polt reported on the last day of school, which is May 16, with a 1 p.m. dismissal for students in grades 7-12. The students in kindergarten through grade six will be dismissed after a trip to the zoo that day.

Teacher work days are May 17 and 18, with staff being checked out on May 18. Grades are due on May 17 and report cards will be sent home by the end of next week.

Polt advised that 10 students were welcomed at the kindergarten roundup, and there is a possibility of two more.

The elementary field day is scheduled for Friday, May 13, beginning at 11:30 a.m. District track will be held Thursday, May 12, with Class D state track scheduled for May 20 and 21. District golf is scheduled for Monday, May 16, at Rolling Hills Country Club, and state golf is May 24 and 25 at Lake Maloney Golf Course in North Platte.

The community cleanup day is scheduled for the morning of Monday, May 16. It will only be for students in grades 7-11 since the elementary students will be at the zoo.

Mr. Polt thanked the custodial staff for doing a great job cleaning the job in preparation for graduation on Saturday. He reported that the seniors have extra money left in their account and is open to suggestions for what to do with the money; however, he suggested buying extra tables for events held at the school.

Report on Co-op is Given

Principal Polt and Athletic Director Brian Guenther gave a report on the Osmond-Randolph co-op proceedings that have taken place since the April board meeting.

The student body of both Osmond and Randolph voted on a new mascot and colors for the co-op basketball teams. The Osmond-Randolph Hawks with gold and black for the colors was the winner.

A meeting of the Randolph and Osmond varsity basketball girls was held Monday in Randolph with 23 girls attending. A similar meeting was scheduled for Tuesday in Osmond for the boys’ basketball team. The next step will be to decide on the uniforms the teams will need to order, Polt said.

Mr. Guenther reported that the varsity scheduled have been worked out and are pretty evenly split between Osmond and Randolph for home games. They will now need to work on the junior high schedule, he said.

“Practices are still up in the air,” Guenther said. “We’ll work that out as we go.”

Mr. Polt said he is happy with how quickly the athletic director and coaches put the schedules together.

A question was raised about moving the “home” crowd to the east side of the gym since, with both Osmond and Randolph people, they will need more room. No decision was made, however, the discussion on the matter was positive.
