RHS duo earns State gold; helps team earn third at State

KEARNEY — Randolph seniors Alex Heiman and Tyson Junck placed first at State Speech competition Friday, March 19.

They are the duet acting champions in Nebraska with a script called “Abbott and Costello.”

This is an interesting twist of the original script.

Each event at State has two rounds of preliminaries and only six competitors from each event compete in front of three judges for medals.

Heiman and Junck received first place and second ratings in prelim rounds to qualify them for the finals.

When all was said and done, they were ranked first place with perfect scores and were named Champions.

Heiman was also named runner-up in serious prose and Junck was runner-up in humorous prose.

For a third medal, Heiman placed fifth in poetry.

Each place the boys received is worth points as a team. The two boys earned enough points to place Randolph third at State to tie Osmond for that spot. Wausa finished second at state, while Humphrey claimed the Class D1 state championship.

The Randolph speech team has worked hard throughout the season and have participated in nine speech events overall.

“I am very proud of Alex and Tyson. They have been dedicated throughout the season and their talent is tremendous. It was so exciting to see their reactions when they were on the medal stand,” Coach Peggy Lackas said.
