Osmond Tigers claim three more victories in week’s games

The Osmond boys put in an impressive week of basketball, winning the week’s three contests by an average of 30 points per game. Of those 12 quarters played, only three times did the opposition score double figures. This is just one of many statistics to exemplify the consistent defensive effort executed by the now 5-0 Osmond Tigers.

Osmond 60, Boyd County 29

OSMOND — On Tuesday night, Dec. 10, the Tigers hosted the Spartans of Boyd County. The team was focused and ready to compete from the opening second, overwhelming the Spartans in the first half with intense defense and dazzling fast break offense. The Tigers took a 35-10 lead into halftime and cruised to a dominant home win.

Osmond was led by the scoring duo of Keaton Timmerman and Graysen Schultze, both cats scored 18 that evening. Justus Maertins added eight points, while Aaron Chishiba put up four points to go along with his impressive eight steals. Ryan Schmit and Keaton Wattier also contributed four points apiece to aid the Tiger victory.

Osmond 50, Wynot 28

OSMOND — The Blue Devils of Wynot came to town Friday night, Dec. 13, and left with their sixth straight loss to the Tigers.

“It wasn’t the prettiest of games; some may have considered it ugly, but our guys demonstrated their grit and toughness, still managing to win by 22 points,” commented Coach Todd Schulze. The “ugly” that coach was referring to was the low field goal percentage displayed by the Tigers, shooting an abysmal 33%.

“We were getting the shots we wanted,” he said. “If you look at our team’s shot chart, we took the majority of our attempts from inside the paint, which is what we want, but our guys just couldn’t seem to get many fortunate rolls or bounces off the rim and struggled to put up points.”

Thankfully for the Tigers, they showed once again the impact they can have on the defensive end, forcing 33 Wynot turnovers and never allowing them to get comfortable in their offensive attack.

Osmond was led in scoring by the 16 points of Maertins. The senior also added eight rebounds and four steals, playing his most consistent game of the young season. Timmerman and Schultze both scored double-figures, with 12 and 10 respectively. Graysen also added eight steals, playing a key role in the Tiger defensive effort.

Osmond 75, Plainview 38

PLAINVIEW — The third contest of the week saw the Tigers take a short drive to Plainview on Saturday, Dec. 14, and come away with their most impressive performance of the season. Osmond took aim at forgetting the previous night’s lackluster shooting performance and get back to doing what they do best, forcing turnovers and sharing the ball offensively.

“I was genuinely impressed with how our guys competed and played with confidence all four quarters,” said Coach Schulze.

Osmond shot 57% from the floor and held Plainview to just 39%. That is, when the Pirates were able to shoot the ball, being forced to turn it over 22 times by the intense pressure defense put on by the Tigers. Osmond capitalized off those turnovers and used them to fuel a balance scoring attack.

Schultze led all scorers with a career-high 26 points. It was certainly an efficient scoring effort for the junior, shooting 68% from the floor, including splashing in all three of his shots behind the arc.

Timmerman was one rebound shy of a double-double to go with his 22 points. Maertins scored 11 points and Chishiba got himself going on offense as well, putting up 10 points and three assists.

“We’ve played five games so far and have held four of those opponents under 40 points, something our young men take a lot of pride in. We’ll have our work cut out for us Tuesday night against Creighton, a team that has averaged 61 points in its three games this season,” said Coach Schulze.
