OHS speech team is district champion; headed to state

POLK — The Osmond speech team is the Class D1-4 District Champion! The speech team traveled to High Plains Community School in Polk for the district meet on Thursday, March 3. Taking second place at the district meet was Hampton High School, with High Plains coming in third.

Other teams competing in the district were Elgin Pope John, Shelton, St. Edward, Elgin Public, Franklin, Giltner, Heartland Lutheran, Kenesaw, Silver Lake, Red Cloud and Deshler.

Seven of the Osmond entries at the meet came away with first place finishes. They included the following: Oral Interpretation of Drama (OID) team of Erica Heiman, James Doyle, Erin Wagner, Riley Wagner and Kaden Polt; duet acting team of Kaden Polt and Riley Wagner; humorous prose by Kaden Polt; serious prose by Riley Wagner; informative speech by Erin Wagner; persuasive speech by Kenzie von Rentzell.

Second place finishes were the following: Persuasive speech by Isaac Harder; informative speech by Kenzie von Rentzell; poetry by Erica Heiman; humorous prose by James Doyle.

Receiving third place were Caleb Miller with an entertainment speech, and the duet of Matthew Alderson and Erica Heiman. In extemporaneous, Isaac Harder received a fifth place medal, while Matthew Alderson received a seventh place medal.

All those placing first, second or third will be competing at the state speech meet in Kearney on Friday, March 18.

“I am incredibly proud of the hard work and dedication these students have put into this speech season,” said speech coach Leah Kuhl. “My favorite part of coaching is watching them progress each meet and watching the team grow. I am thankful for the Mrs. Marks’ help during late night practices and all the parents and community members who support our team.”

Battle Creek Meet

The speech team traveled to the Battle Creek meet on Saturday, Feb. 26. Placing for the varsity were Kaden Polt, second in humorous prose, and Kaden Polt and Riley Wagner, third in duet acting. For next-In Varsity, placing were Kenzie von Rentzell, second in informative and second in persuasive speaking; Kaden Polt, Riley Wagner, Erica Heiman, Erin Wagner, James Doyle, fourth in OID, and Erin Wagner, fourth in informative speaking.

In the junior varsity division, James Doyle was second in humorous prose.
