Local student chosen to represent Wausa at Girls State

WAUSA — Brooke Kumm, daughter of Mike and LaNell Kumm, was chosen as a representative to attend Girls State this year.

The American Legion Auxiliary Girls State is slated to be held in Lincoln in June. The fate of the event is still unknown, however, because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Brooke is a junior at Wausa Public School. Kumm was selected based on criteria through the Wausa Auxiliary unit.

While attending she will study local, county, and state government processes in this nonpartisan political learning experience. Brooke, throughout her life, has been participating in many school and community activities such as volleyball, basketball, track, FBLA, 4-H, TAB, church youth league, one-act and speech.

One thing she particularly enjoyed each year was basketball. Since 7th grade she has been part of the basketball team wether as a manager, player or more currently a honorary player, due to her recent knee injury she was unable to play this year. However, she said “This season made her realize it doesn’t matter abbot the wins and loses but rather our character through each trail.”

Morgan Kleinschmit; daughter of Dan and Cheryl Kleinschmit, was chosen as the alternate. She is also a junior at Wausa Public School.
