Local 4-H members receive recognition at Nebraska State Fair

LINCOLN — While the fair looked different than it has in the past, the Nebraska State Fair provided an opportunity for young people to celebrate their successes and the work they have been doing throughout the year. The 2020 Nebraska State Fair included 4-H and FFA livestock competitions, contests, presentations and static exhibits. Despite the changes because of the pandemic, Pierce County 4-Hers shined at the Nebraska State Fair.

Static exhibits chosen for exhibition at the Nebraska State Fair were displayed in booth style by county. Because of the change, some of the projects, such as foods, horticulture, floriculture and large item exhibits, were to be submitted virtually. The static exhibits displayed for exhibition were not rejudged but were given the opportunity to be selected for special recognition and “Best of Show” Awards.

Pierce County 4-Hers receiving special recognition are: Landon Oltjenbruns, Aerospace (rocket); Cayden Holan, Home Environment; Sarah Fenton, Photography; Brandon Thomsen, Photography; Alexus Sindelar, Photography selected to be displayed in the Extension Dean’s Office and CASNR

The 4-H livestock shows were not without changes either. All 4-H shows were moved to the first weekend of the fair instead of being with the FFA shows on the second weekend. The youth exhibiting livestock were able to compete in a live event, giving them the opportunity to showcase their efforts.

Pierce County 4-Hers who received awards are: Jaycee Schomberg, Champion Senior Beef Showmanship, Champion Foundation Simmental Breeding Heifer; Weston Stemick, Reserve Champion Market Beef Hereford, Reserve Champion Steer-British Breed

This year, the Nebraska State Fair 4-H Fashion Show was divided into three smaller fashion shows to accommodate the new space in Raising Nebraska and social distancing requirements.
