LCC school will get new emergency alarm system

LAUREL  — Laurel-Concord-Coleridge School will soon have a new updated fire alarm system.

Menford Electric, Fordyce, put in the low bid to put in the new system for the school.

The electric company will begin working within the next few weeks. The company is dedicated to making this a smooth upgrade for the school, said owner John Pinkelman.

They will be working through the evening hours from 4 p.m.-4 a.m. They will also be closely communicating with the school to avoid conflicting with school events taking place in the evening.

The goal for completion is shortly after the first of the year. This new system will be connected to the law enforcement as well as any of the administration team.

The current system is not connected to either.

The Level 3 students have been enjoying a new addition to the playground.

A new wheel chair swing and a full support swing with harness were purchased and put into place at the LCC middle school. These new swings have already been used and loved by students.

Jennifer VanMeter was present to discuss a new program that is in effect this school year, a program called the Kindness Challenge.

VanMeter began by asking board members to reflect on their own middle school experiences, from here she talked about instilling an “Attitude of Gratitude”. Helping move the focus from the negatives of “Don’t do this” or “Avoid that” to a more positive attitude.

During the month of October, the school is challenged to find ways to create a positive, kinder culture that will trickle out to the community. The Kindness Challenge website gives examples how to create a culture of kindness.

One way the LCC middle school is encouraging students to be positive influences is through their “Bulldog Bucks”. Students caught doing random acts of kindness receive a “Bulldog Buck.” This buck is placed in a pot, each month 10 names are drawn out to receive a prize for being a positive influence.

There have been several training opportunities for certified staff at LCC. Recently several teachers and community members attended a “Standard Response Protocol” training (SRP). This gave both community and staff a chance to become more aware of the safety protocols at the state level and how they affect LCC.

New teachers have had the opportunity to attend APL training, this is a chance for teachers to strengthen classroom skills and management.

The administration had asked teachers to set individual goals this academic year. These career goals were chosen by the individual teachers to continue to encourage each one to grow professionally, reflecting components of becoming effective teachers they aspire to be.

These goals were discussed at a recent teacher in-service. Teachers were paired into small groups to further discuss personal goals and collaborate on achieving these goals, and the resources needed.

LCC was selected to be part of a “Nebraska Loves Public Schools” forum hosted by News Channel Nebraska. A panel of community members will be asking questions presented by a moderator.

The panel will be answering questions about how LCC is preparing students for the workplace.

“Lots of positive things to share in our communities, Coleridge, Concord, and Laurel. We have had many students come back to work,” said Christiansen in regards to the event.
