LCC School Board gets update on wrestling co-op

LAUREL — Laurel-Concord-Coleridge School board members met and listened to a presentation by Principal Paige Parsons and Jean Granquist, Title I Teacher and Interventionist at their June 14 meeting.

Parsons and Granquist explained the MTSS (Multi-Tiered Systems of Support, an academic support and intervention program). The program includes all students from regular education to special education. The process includes continuous improvement and is evidence-based strategy.

Eighty percent of the students receive all in class instruction. Fifteen percent are in the middle range for the amount of support needed. Five percent include the most help needed at the most intense level. This includes special education students.

“The process took a lot of involvement with staff members,’’ Parsons said. “It just comes down to providing the best core instruction and finding the things we need to strengthen.’’

Granquist shared student achievement as measured by the AimsWeb assessment.

It was also decided the school will offer a high school girls wrestling program as a cooperative with Randolph Public School.

LCC School has completed its second year of a two-year agreement with Randolph Public School for the High School Wrestling program.

Administration, coaching staff, athletes and parents continue to have positive opinions regarding this partnership and the resulting opportunities for LCC students.

The school intends to continue this cooperative agreement with Randolph.  According to NSAA guidelines, this would be a 2-year commitment, and as a renewal of an existing, board-approved cooperative agreement, does not require Board action at this time.

Additionally, the NSAA is requiring a separate cooperative agreement to be approved and submitted for now sanctioned Girls Wrestling programs.

The Quad County Northeast Blaze team has had female wrestlers as part of its teams the past two years, and anticipates female interest and participation to continue moving forward.

The NSAA-requires a cooperative agreement for the High School Girls Wrestling program with Randolph Public School.  The agreement for the Girls Wrestling program does not require nor result in additional coaching staff.

As part of the cooperative agreement, LCC will continue to provide one assistant coach for the High School Wrestling program (boys and girls).  In addition, the two schools share all program costs.

LCC will continue to host a wrestling program at the Junior High level (7th-8th) for both boys and girls, during this same time period.

District administrators from both districts will move forward with review, revision and development of the Cooperative Handbooks that will be presented for Board approval.

The Board also looked at meal prices for the 2021-2022 school year.

The recommended price increases for student and adult meals, both breakfast and lunch, were once again limited to $0.05, as the increases have been for the past three years.  There are no additional price adjustments recommended.

The Board is considering the formal approval of the Interlocal Agreement with ESU 5 (Beatrice) for Secondary Spanish Instruction for the 2021-2022 school year.

The provided 0.69 FTE Spanish teacher will provide six periods of instruction each day at the High School level.  The cost to the district includes the teacher’s salary and benefits and all program supplies ($66,534.00).

LCC School has reassigned a paraprofessional, who also holds teacher certification, to serve in the role of classroom proctor during all virtual Spanish classes.  This individual may also proctor another virtual course (American Government, received from Wynot School).

Additionally, this staff member may be available to provide assistance to English Learner students as needed.

LCC has submitted an insurance claim for roof repair specific to the existing roof over the gymnasiums and Elementary School at the Laurel Campus.
