LCC first graders plant tree for Arbor Day

LAUREL — The Laurel Tree Board celebrated Arbor Day by planting an Autumn Blaze Maple tree at the LCC Elementary playground with the LCC first-grade classes.

Community Forester Specialist Graham Herbst from Neb. Forest Service in Omaha visited with the students about Arbor Day, and answered questions.

The students helped to plant the new tree. Herbst read the Arbor Day proclamation.

Herbst had arrived earlier in the day and accompanied the Tree Board on a tour of some of Laurel’s public trees, and to discuss a web program to assist the Tree Board in finishing the community tree inventory that was started in 2020.

A tree inventory is the most efficient and cost-effective way to care for trees and keep the community attractive.

The information gained can help to avoid expensive tree emergencies and have a ‘care plan’ in place.

The Laurel Tree Board members are Sandra Cross, Gregg McClary, Randy Patefield, Mike Mainz, Dwayne Freeman and Elaine and Shane Bathke.

They have volunteered many hours of time to assist with the tree inventory, and in pruning and trimming the public trees in the Haskell Field area.

Anyone interested in joining the Tree Board should contact Chris Rasmussen, Economic Development Coordinator at the City Office, 256-3112.
