Cards defeat Wynot and Winside but fall to Osmond

RANDOLPH — The Cardinals defeated Winside, 52-7, Friday in the first round of the Randolph Holiday Tourney, but fell 50-35 to undefeated Osmond in the title game. 

The Cards completely dominated Winside in all phases of the game. 

Carter Schnoor led a trio of double-figure scorers, pumping in 17 points. Schnoor had a great all-around game, as he also dished out nine assists and collected seven steals. 

Justin Haselhorst and Keaton Backhaus both hit for 12 points in the contest. 

Jamison Svehla led the local team on the boards, pulling down seven rebounds. Osmond and Randolph played pretty evenly in the first half of their title contest, but Osmond took control in the second half to cruise to a big 50-33 win, 

The Cards trailed 20-17 heading into the halftime break, but the Tigers came out firing to start the second half, as they put together an 18-6 scoring run to take a 38-23 lead into the final frame. In the final game before the Holiday break, Randolph topped Wynot, 40-31. 

Randolph got double-figure scoring from Carter Schnoor who tied for scoring honors with 15, and Justin Haselhorst, who buried three treys on his way to an 11-point showing. 

Wynot seemed to have little energy in the first quarter as they struggled. Randolph got seven points from Schnoor and a pair of three-pointers by Haselhorst as they raced to the 17-4 lead. 

Wynot’s defense showed up in the second quarter and their offense started to hit form long range. A pair of treys by Haberman and one by Owen Sudbeck sparked an 11-8 run by the Blue Devils. The Cardinals got a trey by Keaton Backhaus, as Wynot cut the lead to under 10 points, 24-15, at halftime. 

In the third quarter, the two teams traded bombs. Wynot got two more three-pointers by Haberman and followed off an offensive rebound by Hunter Heimes. 

Randolph countered with two treys by Backhaus and a late one by Haselhorst, as they maintained a 42-31 lead. 

Wynot rallied to cut the game to two possessions early in the final quarter. Another trey by Haberman and field goals by Hunter Heimes and Peyton Wieseler cut the lead to five points. Wynot was hurt down the stretch by hitting only 1-4 freethrows while the Cards sealed the game hitting 6-6 from the line for the 40-31 win.
