Randolph American Legion baseball team ends season at Area Tournament

HARTINGTON — The Hartington Seniors made quick work of their first-round foe in the Area C1 Senior American Legion baseball tournament here Friday.

Hartington topped Randolph 8-0 in a game shortened by the run rule.

Hartington pitching stifled Randolph as Ted Bengston and Owen Heimes combined on a one-hit shutout. Bengston started the day on the mound and earned the win.

Bengston struck out six batters in four innings of work for the win. Heimes struck out five of the six batters he faced in two innings of solid relief. Keaton Backhaus suffered the loss for Randolph.

Hartington got into a groove early, getting on the board in the first inning, when a Seth Wiebelhaus triple drove in Brady Steffen and Chase Lammers. Wiebelhaus then scored himself when he came home on a passed ball.

Hartington plated another run in the third frame when Wiebelhaus forced a Randolph pitching change, then drew a walk off of new pitcher Carter Schnoor. Wiebelhaus then stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball. He came home on a Dain Whitmire sacrifice to give Hartington the 4-0 advantage.

Hartington extended its lead to 6-0 with two more runs in the next frame.
