Pleasanton ends Lady Cards’ season in Dist. title game

ALBION — The Lady Cardinals defense held on for the first three quarters, before Pleasanton ultimately cruised to a 47-24 lead in Friday night’s D1-2 District Finals game.

Both team’s offenses worked slow to start the game. Randolph scored just five points in the opening eight minutes, but Pleasanton took just an 8-5 lead into the second quarter.

By halftime, the Lady Bulldogs grew that lead to 20-10.

Randolph fought back in the third, allowing just four points while scoring eight to cut the lead to 24-18.

Despite the Lady Cardinals allowing just 24 points in the first three quarters, the Lady Bulldogs offense surged to life in the fourth quarter, posting 23 points to carry out the win.

Emma Bermel led the way for Randolph with nine points, and she was followed by Cindy Haselhorst scoring eight. Sophia Harder added three points, and Charlie Winkelbauer and Carlie Nordhues each contributed two points.

Pleasanton was led by sophomore Isabelle Paitz scoring a game-high 15 points, shooting 6-12 on the night.

Neither team shot the ball very well. Randolph went 9-40 on the night, with just one player shooting about 50 percent on the night. Sophia Harder went 1-1 on the night.

Randolph could not convert on the long ball either, going 0-8 from three point territory, but Pleasanton did not find much success either from deep, making just three of 16 shots.

A big factor in the low scoring in the first three quarters came down low. Neither team excelled on offensive rebounding. Randolph grabbed three offensive boards on the night, while Pleasanton grabbed six.

The Lady Bulldogs won the battle on the boards with 31 rebounds to Randolph’s 25.

The loss for Randolph once again ends the Lady Cards season one game shy of the State Tournament in Lincoln.

Kelsie Eledge, Carlie Nordhues, Charlie Winkelbauer, Addison Villwok, Emma Bermel, Cindy Haselhorst, Sophia Harder, and Shannon Haselhorst are all seniors that ended their high school basketball career with the loss.

Randolph finished the year with a record of 14-10.
