One new candidate among those running for school board

RANDOLPH - Randolph voters will have one new choice when it comes to picking a new school board member.

One choice, but a good choice, if Lucas Miller says so himself.

Miller will appear on the general election ballot for the Randolph Public Schools Board of Education, filling a void by Loren Haselhorst, who decided not to run for another term.

Pending a late write-in candidate, Miller will be unopposed as a new board member.

Incumbents Paul Schmitt and Sandy Owens will also appear on the ballot with voters choosing three from a total of three candidates.

Although he’s always attended a few school board meetings each year, Miller said he’s stepped up his attendance in the past six months to prepare.

Miller has also taken online training provided by the Nebraska Association of School Boards for new board members so he can hit the ground running.

“I want to be up-to-date and pick up where the board is right now and come in ready to go,” he said.

He will play an integral role on the community advisory committee in the selection of the next school superintendent as Jeff Hoesing retires at the end of this academic year.

Miller and his wife, Becky, have four children: Adam and Eli in fourth grade; Lauren in second grade and Lila in 4-year-old preschool at the Cardinal Kids Learning Center.

He’s involved in farming at his property two miles south of town. Miller is also the director of the Nebraska Soybean Association and president of the Cardinal Kids Learning Center.

“The school has done some great things and I just want to continue to work with the current and new administration to do the best we can for education in Randolph,” he said.
