Lady Hawks win against Wausa

WAUSA - The Osmond-Randolph Hawks opened the Wausa Post-Holiday Tournament on Thursday against the host Wausa Vikings. The Hawks came out to a slow start as they were only able to put up four points in a defensive opening quarter. The second quarter saw the scoring break open a little more as Osmond-Randolph would score 13 to Wausa’s 14 points. Wausa held a slim 23-17 edge over Osmond-Randolph going into the halftime break. A great defensive effort in the third quarter set the tone for the second half for the Hawks, as they were able to hold Wausa to only six points. Wausa still held onto a 29-25 lead entering the final quarter of play. The Hawks defensive effort in the third quarter carried over into the fourth quarter as Osmond-Randolph would eventually take the lead about midway through the final quarter. The finish was as back and forth as you will see in a game. But with good defense and clutch free-throw makes down the stretch, the Hawks were able to come away victorious. The 39-37 win marks the second win on the season for the Hawks. They would play the winner of Lutheran High Northeast and Niobrara/Verdigre for a championship game on Saturday.

In the championship game on Saturday, the Hawks faced a strong Niobrara-Verdigre Cougars squad which they had just met the week before. The Cougars came out strong forcing Osmond-Randolph into 17 first-quarter turnovers to take a 14-6 lead. The second quarter saw the Hawks get some decent looks on the press and pushed the ball up the court. It looked as though Osmond-Randolph was mounting for a comeback when N/V had their best player get into foul trouble and another starter get tagged with a foul and a technical foul back-to-back. The Hawks were not able to fully mount a comeback as the Cougars showed why they were a state tournament team last year with a lot of depth this year. The Cougars would force the Hawks into a season high of 50 turnovers for the game and would walk away with a 64-38 victory. For the second straight tournament, the Hawks would have to settle for silver.
