Bradley is sworn in as Randolph’s new Mayor

RANDOLPH - The Randolph City Council meeting last Wednesday featured a changing of the arms at mayor.

Newly elected mayor George Bradley was sworn in, relieving Dwayne Schutt of his mayoral duties. City Councilmen Timothy Lemmons and Brandon Backhaus were also sworn in for their new terms. Lemmons continues into another term on the City Council, while Backhaus fills the seat of Councilman Wattier.

Bradley’s first move as mayor was to express appreciation to Schutt and Wattier for their service to the City of Randolph.

“I thought that was common courtesy and that we owed that to them for their eight years of service,”

Bradley now begins a four year term as mayor, but he has served his community for years in various aspects.

He has spent time on the Randolph School Board, on the Parish Council at St. Francis, on the library board, and is also on the board of directors for the senior center as well.

For someone from a big city like Newark, New Jersey, Bradley says he has learned how important community involvement is as a resident of Randolph.

“It means a lot to me. I grew up in a big city, but living in this small town for nearly 50 years, you learn to appreciate people more. We are here to help each other.”

As for his goals during his time as mayor, Bradley wants  to focus on the local economy and infrastructure.

“I would like to see a business or two brought in. I would also like to repave the existing brick roads that are left.”

In his first meeting in the big chair, Bradley only took over the latter half of the meeting, but quickly went to work making sure he was up to date on all of his responsibilities.

He flipped through notes to get up to speed on current topics being discussed, and would clarify or ask a question when needed.

“That is important to me to know what is going on,” said Bradley. “My school board experience is where I got that from, and I serve on the board of directors for the senior center as well.”

Bradley will serve for four years as mayor of Randolph, and was quick to laugh about the fact there are no term limits.

“As far as I know there are no term limits, but at 71 years old I am not worried about term limits. I will know when to get out,” said Bradley with a laugh and a smile.

Bradley’s first and only meeting as mayor went rather easy, and he will reconvene with the City Council on Jan. 3, 2019 at 6:30 p.m.
