Lady Bears drop a pair of contests

LAUREL — Laurel-Concord-Coleridge had a couple of tough games to end the regular season of the 2022-23 campaign before heading into C2-5 Sub-District action Feb. 13.

The Lady Bears won their opening game in C2-5 over Osmond-Randolph to advance to the semifinals against the top seed in the tournament, Crofton.

Earlier in the week, the Lady Bears dropped a game to Wisner-Pilger on Feb. 9, 53-36 and a home contest to Norfolk Lutheran High Northeast, 51-28 on Feb. 7.

Against the Lady Gators, LCC played right with Wisner-Pilger in the opening half before getting very defensive in the third frame, holding the Lady Gators to a single field goal to take the lead, 31-29.

Things fell apart from there as the Lady Bears were outscored 26-5 to fall by the 53-36 final score.

Berniece McCorkindale led the LCC offense with 12 points followed by Mallory Eriksen with 10.

Tali Erwin added eight, Lainey Schutte chipped in four and Mollie Schutte had a basket.

In the loss the Lutheran High, Erwin got her team going early with a 3-pointer just 39 seconds into the game and a drive through the middle of the paint to put her team up 5-0.

The Lady Eagles scored the next six points to erase the lead, but Eriksen grabbed the lead back with an offensive rebound and put back.

Lutheran High scored foul shot and a jump shot to go up 9-7 but another Erwin drive to the paint with just over 10 seconds left in the quarter made it 9-9.

The Lady Eagles score a couple of free throws with 7.5 seconds left in the first and it gave them an 11-9 lead at the first rest stop.

Laurel-Concord-Coleridge managed an Eriksen free throw in the first half of the second quarter and a couple more by Haley Christensen with 3:45 left before the intermission, but Lutheran High was in the middle a 16-3 run to take control of the game heading into the half.

The Lady Bears played better in the second half, but would lose ground at each break to drop the game.

Eriksen finished with 11 points, Erwin had seven, Christensen had four while Avery Hahne, Lainey Schutte a nd Toni Thompson each had two.
