Tigers are Lewis and Clark Tournament Champions

HARTINGTON — Osmond battled Laurel-Concord-Coleridge for the conference championship on Monday night, Feb. 4, in front of a packed gymnasium at Hartington Cedar Catholic. The Tigers entered the game at 18-1, with their only loss coming to the LCC Bears just a couple weeks before.

The game began with a splash from Justus Maertins. The junior swished a three-pointer for the game’s first points, as he was on his way to score 10 in the quarter for the Tigers. Aaron Chishiba got in the lane for a couple buckets and Merrix Denn added a three-pointer to help Osmond take a two-point lead at the end of the first quarter. The two state-ranked teams evenly matched each other in the second quarter, both scoring 17.

The third quarter once again proved to be the deciding factor in the contest, but this time around, Osmond flipped the script. The defense played by Osmond in the third quarter was impressive. During a six-possession stretch in the third quarter, the Tiger defense forced five turnovers, including two charges and one five-second call on a baseline out of bounds for LCC. Coach Todd Schulze commented, “The momentum was building in our favor during the third quarter. I just kept telling the guys to continue to do what they had been doing and discipline themselves not to keep checking the clock and hoping for it to speed up and get to all zeros, just keep competing.”
