District 42R school board hears report on safety drills

OSMOND — The District 42R Board of Education met Monday night, Nov. 13, after the board workshop. One of the items reported on by Principal Kurt Polt was the safety drills conducted that afternoon and which included a lockdown drill, a fire drill and an evacuation drill. Procedures for all the drills had been discussed and decided by the safety team, with input from Superintendent Dave Hamm. Everything went well during the drills, Polt said. He added, “It is extremely important to hold these drills so all people involved understand what is expected to keep everyone safe.

One board member asked about the active shooter training that staff members participated in some time ago, and whether that would be implemented in addition to the drills. Superintendent Hamm explained that, because many of the shootings in schools were done by students, they do not plan to train the kids in every scenario. There are so many different variables, he said, and they need to have a conversation with staff members on how to go about handling it. Polt added that they will train teachers on what to do.
