Paul A. Schurman

RANDOLPH — Paul A. Schurman Jr., 89, Randolph, died Feb. 17, 2019, at his residence in Randolph.

Mass of Christian burial was Feb. 25 at St. Jane Frances de Chantal Catholic Church, Randolph, with the Rev. Timothy W. Forget officiating.

Burial was at the St. Jane Frances de Chantal cemetery, Randolph.

Visitation and a vigil service were Feb. 24 at the church in Randolph, and continued Monday one hour prior to services.

Pallbearers were Paul’s grandsons, Mark Coenen, Tim Lurz, Anthony Lurz, Chris Korth, Cameron Korth, Ryan Schurman, Tyler Schurman, Colby Promes, Eric Schurman and Colin Schurman.

Honorary pallbearers were Paul’s granddaughters, Melissa Grubb, Michelle Coenen, Cassandra Huff, Tabitha Willan, Catrina Winkelbauer, Angela Lange, Katie Jones, Holly Schurman and Camela Rathje.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Wintz Funeral Home, Hartington.

Paul Andrew Schurman Jr. was born May 4, 1929 in Lantry, S.D., to Paul Andrew and Rose (Marx) Schurman Sr. He grew up in the Wynot area and attended country school until the eighth grade. He started working as a hired farm hand at age 16 for several area farmers. Paul married Mary Ann Eskens Nov. 16, 1949, at Sts. Philip & James Catholic Church, St. James. He and Mary Ann moved to a farm east of Randolph in 1959. He continued to milk cows and raise grain and livestock.

Paul Jr. was a member of St. Jane Frances de Chantal Catholic Church and was an usher there. He liked to play cards and spent countless hours to his vocation of farming.

Paul is survived by his seven children and their spouses, Mary Lou Coenen, Randolph; Kary (Dave) Lurz, Verdigre; Barb (Doug) Korth, Randolph; Steve Schurman, Randolph; Roger (Linda) Schurman, Firth; Randy (Lisa) Schurman, Coleridge; and Chuck (Karen) Schurman, Wynot; 17 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Norman and Larry Schurman, Yankton, S.D.; sisters-inlaw, Joyce Schurman, Yankton, S.D.; Marlene Eskens, Coleridge; and Rita (Marvin) Wieseler, Hartington; and brother-in-law, Bill Eskens, Jefferson, Mo.

Preceding Paul in death were his parents; wife. Mary Ann, July 31, 2007, at the age of 79; two brothers, Wilfred and Jim Schurman; and two sisters, Dolores and Romaine.
