Joe A. Hochstein

ST. HELENA — Joe A. Hochstein, 71, St. Helena, died June 28, 2019, at his residence.

Visitation and a vigil service were at the church Monday and continued one hour prior to services Tuesday.

Mass of Christian Burial was July 2 at Holy Family (Immaculate Conception) Catholic Church, St. Helena, with the Rev. Jim Keiter officiating.

Burial was at the Immaculate Conception cemetery, rural St. Helena, with military rites by the Wynot American Legion Post 31 and the American Legion Riders.

Pallbearers were Jamie Lammers, Pat Hochstein, Marcus Hochstein, Matt Hochstein, Scott Becker and Chad Jansen.

Joseph Arthur Hochstein was born April 30, 1948, in Yankton, S.D., to Paul and Evelyn (Arens) Hochstein. He grew up in the Bow Valley area and attended District 13 country school and Wynot High School. Joe volunteered to serve in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. After his honorable discharge, he farmed and worked at the Yankton, S.D., Human Services Center in the dairy barn. Joe also worked 20 years for Baldwin Filters, Yankton. He still continued to farm until his health prevented him from continuing.

Joe was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and the Wynot American Legion Post 31. He loved to deer hunt and enjoyed the John Deere antique two cylinder tractors.

Joe is survived by his wife, Linda, St. Helena; four children and spouses, Tim Hochstein, St. Helena; Brian Hochstein, St. Helena; Janet (Nick) Odens, Yankton, S.D.; Jeff (Kari) Hochstein, Hartington; five grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Alvin (Heidi) Hochstein, Ocean Springs, Miss.; Richard “Dickie” Hochstein, Hartington; Ron (Diane) Hochstein, Bow Valley; Mary Jean (Alvin) Lammers, Fordyce; Dallas (Dorothy) Hochstein, Hartington; Diane (Clinton) Becker, Fordyce; Bob (Jeannie) Hochstein, Yankton, S.D.; many nieces and nephews; and family friend, Sharon Thoene.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Evelyn; son, Michael; a brother, Clare Hochstein; and brothers-in-law, Kenny Koch and Daryl Leise.
