Gladys Victoria (Swanson) Johnson

TRIMONT, Minn. — Gladys Victoria (Swanson) Johnson died June 7, 2019, at Seasons Healthcare, Trimont, Minn.

A celebration of Life service for Gladys was held June 13 at First Lutheran Church, Trimont, with Pastor Greg Hall officiating.

Burial was at the First Lutheran Cemetery, rural Trimont.

Funeral services were under the direction of Kramer Funeral Home, Trimont.

Gladys was born Feb., 3, 1921, to Otto and Martha Swanson on a farm near Julesburg, Colo. When she was five, she moved with her family to northeast Nebraska. She was baptized and confirmed at Thabor Lutheran Church, Wausa.

After graduating from country school, she moved to Proctor, Minn., to live with her uncle and aunt as a housekeeper. She attended two years of high school in Proctor. In 1940, they moved to Trimont. She graduated from Tri-Mont High School in 1942.

Gladys married Allan Johnson, Sherburn, Minn., March 31, 1946, at Thabor Lutheran Church, Wausa. They made their home on their farm between Sherburn and Trimont, where they raised their four children, Russell, Keith, Eileen and James. They retired from farming in 1986, staying on the farm until 2001, when they moved into Trimont.

Gladys was a homemaker who enjoyed cooking, baking, sewing, and gardening. She was active in the women’s organizations at First Lutheran Church of Trimont, taught Sunday school for many years, attended Bible study, and sang in the choir. She sewed many quilts for family, Lutheran World Relief, and those affected by natural disasters until her eyesight failed.

Gladys is survived by her sons, Keith and James; daughter, Eileen Stoffels; daughter-in-law, Cristina Cafaro-Johnson; grandchildren, Martina Johnson and Karl Stoffels; sister, Leona Wischhof, Wausa; many nieces and nephews, and many friends; including her best friend for almost 80 years, Allene Anderson.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Allan; son, Russell; daughter-in-law, Peggy Wheelock; son-in-law, Maynard Stoffels; sister and brother-in-law, Helen and Clarence (Clicker) Suhr; brother and sister-in-law, Norman and Becky Swanson; and brother-in-law, Eugene Wischhof.
