Gerthy M. Johnson

NORFOLK — Gerthy M. Johnson, Norfolk, formerly of Winside, died Oct. 18, 2018, at Wakefield Health Care Center, Wakefield. Visitation was Tuesday at St Paul’s Lutheran Church, Winside. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Oct. 24, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Winside, with Rev. Harrison Goodman officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be Gerthy’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Christopher Johnson, Michael Johnson, Steve Sample, Larry Johnson, Jeremiah Johnson, Brian Johnson and Scott Johnson. Interment will be in Concord Cemetery, Concord. Arrangements are under the direction of Hasemann Funeral Home, Wayne. Gerthy May Johnson was born May 10, 1920, on a farm near Concord, to Rudolph and Lena (Weseloh) Swanson. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, northeast of Concord. Gerthy attended Myrtle Creek Country School and District #30 east of Concord. She worked at a meat market in Concord and later a grocery store in Wayne. Gerthy married Milton A. Johnson Aug. 2, 1944, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, rural Concord. They moved to Mineral Wells, Texas, where they lived until November 1945. In the spring of 1946, the couple moved to a farm southwest of Concord until the fall of 1957, when they moved to a farm near Winside. In 1973, the couple retired and moved to Norfolk. Gerthy was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Winside. Gerthy is survived by her children, Roger (Karmen) Johnson, Norfolk; Charlene Johnson, Middleburg, Fla.; Randall Johnson, Wayne; Lorence (Donna) Johnson, Wakefield; Lamont (Karen) Johnson, Norfolk; and Lesa Johnson, Norfolk; grandchildren, MeLisa, Sheila, Larry, Jeremiah, Brian, Scott, Jennifer and Michael; 20 great-grandchildren, Katrina, Kimber, Trenton, Emacy, Zachary, Ashley, Nathaniel, Connor, Kaitlyn, Madison, Keirrah, Jacob, Layten, Sadie, Chase, Bailey, Rylie, Liam, Rylan and Elliana; and nine great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Gerthy was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Milton, in 1987; grandson, Christopher Johnson, in 2009; great-granddaughter, Carleanna; sisters, Rose Thies, Elsie Mattes, Edna Dangberg, Lillie Lippolt and Mildred Dangberg. Memorials may be directed to the Johnson family for later designation.
